The Beauty of Poetry

Poetry is an artistic expression of the “beautiful.” It encompasses feeling, imagination, beauty. Poetry is both “art” and “truth.”

The poet, sometimes through cognition, which is like a gift, is able to create something beautiful. From Shakespeare to Milton to Wordsworth. The list is endless. To be able to see things through the eye of a poet, is a wondrous thing.

Poetry uses figurative expressions to transmit ideas, awake feelings, and inspire the imagination, which connect the individual mind and heart to universality.

It is also use to create a deeper meaning of life/the world. Its fragrance is intoxicating.

Inhale it...

Poetic beauty is like the marigold, rose, daisy, and jasmine. A poet employ beautiful imagery, for the effective use of metaphorical language.

E.E Cummings’ “I Carry Your Heart With Me” is a good one. It captured the “beautiful” as regards poetry.

Poetry is beautiful, in the sense that it uses simple words, to represent other meanings in real life. It can be a single phrase or a whole poem. The beauty in the play of sound in words, in some poems, is realized, when you read the poems out aloud.

Poetry is like the unspoken words you wished to have said all along. It is the shedding of tears, the sound of laughter, the healing of wounds.

Poems don’t need to rhyme.
Rhyming is no guarantee of beauty. And I believe every poem is unique.

To some, poetry is simply just words on a paper; another redundant stuff. To others, poetry is the truth they seek. To me, poetry is life personified.

    1. Dear Freethinker and Joni,

Hello! I concur with both of you about the various functions and purposes that poems may serve for different people.

Many poems can reveal the poets’ humanity and sensitive spirit with certain tenderness coloured by various intensities of yearning and understanding.

I personally only write rhyming poems, often with end rhymes, internal rhymes as well as rhythmic devices, syllabic schemes, and other subtle or overt features, as I consider many of the non-rhyming ones that I routinely encounter to be too unstructured and ad hoc, their form (or lack thereof) even widely abused, exploited or misunderstood by those who lack the required imagination and discipline to achieve or maintain poetic excellence.

For these reasons, I have decided that my poems should rhyme and have rhythmic schemes, syllabic patterns and other numeric properties and calligraphic considerations, as well as being wedded to my art, graphics and musical compositions.

In any case, we shall keep writing poems so that we may continue to improve and satisfy ourselves, regardless of what others might think of our poems. After all, poetry is always a subjective art and caters to different people and purposes. One person’s poem could be another person’s poison.

You can easily locate my poems concerning a variety of topics, which are accessible at https://soundeagle.wordpress.com/tag/poem/

By the way, I would like to inform you that sometimes I refrain from using the WordPress Reader because it can be quite disconcerting to discover how some posts actually appear there.😮 😦 😧 😨 It seems that the WordPress Reader can sometimes be somewhat limited in how closely it reproduces contents of blogs, given that it has to deal with a wide range of blogs. It tends to strip away a lot of styling and formatting components. Therefore, a post can look very different and even improper on the WordPress Reader. So, I tend to read posts and pages directly on the blogs where they are published, especially when they contain advanced styling like mine.

      1. Thank you, SoundEagle, for your insightful contribution on this topic. Just like you clearly stated towards the end of your comment, it’s a matter of choice, because poetry is a subjective art, that caters to be different people and purposes.
Regarding the WordPress.com Reader, your points have been noted. ☺

      2. All good points my friend. Thank you for taking the time to respond to us. You are also right about the WordPress reader. I do enjoy free style poetry some of my favorite poets on-line utilize that methodology and they are teachers of literature. I also write rhyming poetry and enjoy it very much. Have a truly blessed day. Again thank you for your input I truly appreciate your caring enough to write. Love and hugs Joni

      3. Dear Freethinker and Joni,

Thank you for your respective replies.

To offer just one example to illustrate some of the points that I have made in my previous comment, I would like to mention that I have some very short and sweet poems at https://soundeagle.wordpress.com/2012/09/05/soundeagle-in-art-and-poetry/

The said post demonstrates very well both texturally and graphically how I integrate my poems into art, graphics, multimedia and musical compositions, plus some detailed explanations of how a specific poem there was composed and designed. Rather than just writing the text of the poem, many of my poems are created holistically and synergistically. Such an approach is not only much more time-consuming but also requires skills in other artistic domains.

      5. Dear Joni,

There is no need for having special software to use my websites. However, some of my posts and pages contain animations and/or games, which will only be visible and functional if Adobe Flash Player has been installed. In my experience, the web browser that can best work with Adobe Flash Player happens to be Internet Explorer. May you enjoy to your heart’s content! 🙂

      8. You are very welcome, Focus Girl. ❤

How are you doing lately? I hope that life has been kind to you during this pandemic. As we maintain spatial distancing and stay home to avoid contracting and spreading the coronavirus, please kindly allow me the pleasure to entertain you and your family with a bespoke poem and music plus animation recently published on my blog.

This latest post of mine contains a dynamic animation synchronized to music that I rendered and recorded in high resolution. The rhyming poem aside, if you like both mood-lifting music and eye-catching animation, then may you find my latest creation enjoyable at https://soundeagle.wordpress.com/2020/10/10/if-my-name-were-moon-tonight-with-clair-de-lune/

Since music can be an essential part of the process of sustainability, wellbeing, healing and even social change and spiritual awakening, may my music, animation and poem in the said post bring you some creative “distractions” or “diversions” amidst the disruptions and woes engendered by the pandemic.

Please enjoy to your heart's content!

  1. You are 100% right that you can discover so much more from poetry by reading aloud; but I often have to deliberately slow myself down! Also, poetry can be beautiful, but like all art forms it can also be ugly, grotesque and engender a host of other unrelated emotions to those that we feel when we see or read something beautiful. I take your point that a beautiful poem will paint a vivid picture and that picture will cause a range of emotions in the reader, but that emotion will not always be the same for different readers. Certainly, poetry has a way with words when it comes to describing the magic of life in all it’s forms, and one man’s poison is another man’s cure, but we have to appreciate that just because we don’t like particular forms or interpretations of poetry (there are plenty I don’t like) doesn’t mean that their message isn’t valid, or that they are not beautiful in their own way. In other words beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so even if you are the only person in the world to understand and love your poetry, then there is a beauty to it, and you should write away!

  2. Isn’t it fascinating how words have different meaning to the ones who read them? It is even mind boggling to think about how at various stages, we ourselves, will find new meaning in reading the same words over again. It is exciting indeed. Great post!

      1. You’re welcome 😊.
My blog is all messed up after migration….none of my followers are receiving any notifications….as if it wasn’t enough that I lost around 80% of followers. The remaining ones can only read when they click on my name. I’m almost certain, I’ll close my current site & create a new one….I’ve been playing ping-pong (I’m being the ball) since last 2 months with WP & Dreamhost (my current host), without any solution to fix the issue. So that’s the only way to reach my fellow bloggers…

        Eighty percent is huge.
Just like you said, it will be better to create a new one.
I will keep up with your posts by clicking on your name then. 🙂

      3. Hey FYI,
This is my last check before I permanently close navinspoems.com & open a new site.

I’ve received following reply from WP. This is my last request to check at your end……🙏

“In order for your subscribers to receive email notifications, they must ensure they have managed their Reader > Followed Site settings for the site in question to enable “Email me new posts” as outlined in the screenshot below:

        https://cld.wthms.co/5hDTaN

As a first step, I would recommend contacting your subscribers and ensure they have toggled their Reader settings appropriately to receive notifications.”

I would also recommend to enable “notify me of new post” (receive web & mobile notification)

If your both the settings are already enabled & you still don’t receive any notification, then “Houston we’ve a problem…..mayday”. If not, then I still have some hope.

Pls let me know at your convenience 🙏❤️

  10. I feel like I can’t ever get enough of poetry. It’s something you just can’t explain in specific ways. I love it so much.
I remember a time when I was so depressed. I wrote a poem instantly based on how I felt. It took me less than an hour to do so. When I was done, I felt ok. OMG, It worked like a miracle. You guys should try it. It really helps. Just put your sincere thoughts down,. I’m sure you will be alright. Also, don’t forget to pray. God bless.

  11. Great post! Poetry for me is an expression of hidden feelings. It’s imagery is beyong reality. It is a combination of feelings and imagination. A poet is the most expressive person by writing down his or her thoughts. Most if not all, are introvert and quite a thinker than a speaker.
